First-Timer's Guide to Progressive Field
Going to a game?

Progressive Field is an easy first visit once you clear two things at the door, and both of them stop people cold. The whole park is cashless, so the bills in your wallet buy nothing inside. And the gates take mobile entry only, so your ticket has to live on your phone, because a paper ticket, a printout, or a screenshot won’t scan. Sort those two before you leave the hotel. After that, everything is straightforward, down to an RTA train and an enclosed walkway that bring you out next to the ballpark.
The same RTA rail system reaches Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, and the Red Line runs from the airport to Tower City with no transfer. The Guardians list no luggage storage at the ballpark, so ask your hotel to hold your suitcase before the game.
Heads up: park rules can change between seasons. Check the bag policy, gate times, and alcohol cutoff on the team’s site within 30 days of your visit.
Cashless park, mobile tickets, and bags
The whole park is cashless. Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and the Guards Wallet in the MLB Ballpark app are what registers take, and cash isn’t one of them anywhere in the building. If you arrive with bills, free reverse ATMs turn them into a prepaid card you can spend inside. They are near the Fan Services booths on the main concourse (behind Section 153) and in the upper deck, near the left field gate, and in the right field area, so convert your cash on the way in rather than at the front of a beer line.
Your ticket has to be on your phone. Progressive Field is mobile-entry only. Paper tickets, PDFs, and screenshots won’t scan, so use the live ticket in the MLB Ballpark app or your phone’s wallet. Pull it up and add it to your wallet before you’re standing at the turnstile with a dying battery and no signal. If you are buying for a group, forward the tickets before you get there, because a ticket can’t be forwarded once it has been scanned.
The bag rule is roomy, and it is not a clear-bag park. Any bag up to 16 by 16 by 8 inches clears security: diaper bags, medical bags, clutches, and small bags all make it in. What does not come in: large bags, hard-sided coolers, aerosol cans, selfie sticks, tripods, noisemakers, and stainless steel tumblers like Yeti or Stanley cups.
You can bring your own food and a little to drink. Outside food comes in, subject to a check at the gate, but not into the premium clubs and suites. A soft-sided cooler is allowed. On drinks, each person can bring one clear, factory-sealed water bottle up to 20 ounces, or a small juice box for a child under 12, and an empty plastic water bottle to fill at the stations inside. Cans, glass, and other outside drinks stay outside.
Re-entry is allowed, through one exit. If you want to step out mid-game, you can leave and come back, but only through one dedicated exit at the left field gate, where your ticket gets scanned on the way out and again on the way back in.
Alcohol sales stop at the end of the seventh. Beer sales at the stands and in the seats stop at the end of the seventh inning, or three hours after the scheduled first pitch, and each person can buy up to 2 drinks at a time. If you want a later round, the Corner Bar in right field, including its Fat Head’s Brew Deck, pours to the end of the game, and so do the premium areas.
There is no roof over any of it. Progressive Field is open-air, and it sits close enough to Lake Erie that weather drives real planning here. April games run cold and windy enough for actual winter layers, and the forecast is worth a look the morning of no matter the month. You can find more about the weather month by month in our When to Go section.
If rain stops the game early, keep your ticket. A game counts once 5 innings are complete, or 4 1/2 with the Guardians ahead. If it is postponed before then, tickets bought from the Guardians can be exchanged for another game from a list the club sets. When the makeup is part of a split doubleheader or falls on an off day, your ticket also moves to the makeup date automatically, and the Guardians post the details on their postponed games page. Tickets bought on a resale site follow that site’s own policy.
Gates and timing
The Guardians’ concourse map shows three gates: the Infield Gate behind home plate, the Larry Doby Way Gate on Eagle Avenue behind the left field bleachers, which other Guardians guides call the Left Field Gate, and the Right Field Gate. The RTA walkway from Tower City comes out on Ontario Street next to the ballpark, so use whichever gate is closest to where you arrive.
During the regular season, gates open 1 hour before Sunday through Thursday games, 90 minutes before Friday and Saturday games in April, May, and September, and 2 hours before Friday and Saturday games from late May through late August.
East 4th Street and the statues
Progressive Field sits downtown in the Gateway District, and the pedestrian-only East 4th Street dining strip is about two blocks away. A downtown arrival puts a real bar-and-restaurant district a short walk from the gates.
Three statues stand outside the right field gate. Bob Feller, Larry Doby, and Lou Boudreau stand in the plaza outside the right field gate, where East 9th Street meets Eagle Avenue. Doby’s is the one to read the plaque on. He was the first Black player in the American League, in 1947, and the weight of that is easy to walk past if you don’t know to look. Inside, Jim Thome’s statue stands on the concourse beyond center field, and Heritage Park, also in center field, honors the franchise’s greats around a statue of Frank Robinson. It is open before, during, and after the game, and it is a quieter walk than the main concourse.
The social spaces
A renovation finished before the 2026 season turned much of the outfield into open spaces you can walk into with any ticket. Terrace Hall, a beer hall in the left field Terrace District, is open to all fans, and the Blue Moon Terrace Garden, in the same district, is a rooftop patio with a bar and views of the city. The Corner Bar in right field is two stories, with nearly 40 local and craft beers on tap. If you only spot one quirk, make it the wall in left, a 19-foot face nicknamed the Little Green Monster.
With kids
The Cleveland Clinic Children’s Family Deck in right field has games for kids, including Guardians Dash, Speed Pitch, wiffleball, and a soft play area. Next to it, the Uncrustables Kids Clubhouse is a two-level indoor play area with family restrooms and a lactation room. Every child and adult who goes in needs a signed waiver and a wristband, and you can fill out the waiver ahead of time at mlbwaivers.com/Guardians.
Children under 3 get in free on a parent’s lap. Fan Services hands out free wristbands with your seat location on them, so staff can bring a lost child back to you, and you can borrow a booster seat at the Fan Services booth behind Section 153 by leaving an ID.
Accessibility
Accessible seating is on every level of the ballpark, and you request it when you buy your tickets. Drop-off and pickup are on the curb lane off Ontario Street. Wheelchairs are available at every gate, first come, first served, to get you to and from your seat. You can check out KultureCity sensory bags and headphones at the Fan Services booths, and the Kids Clubhouse has a sensory room. The Guardians’ accessibility guide lists the sections and the rest of the details.
