Progressive Field is open-air with no roof, and it sits close enough to Lake Erie that the weather matters more here than at a lot of parks. For most trips, aim for a clear night from June through August, when the downtown skyline and the smokestack-styled light towers light up beyond the outfield.
Lake Erie weather through the season
- April runs cold and windy in Cleveland. Daytime highs sit around 60, nights drop toward the low 40s, the wind comes off the lake, and early-season snow is not out of the question. For a night game, bring real layers instead of a light jacket, and count yourself lucky if an afternoon turns warm.
- May and June are when the forecast stops being much of a problem. May warms into the low 70s, June into the low 80s, the evenings run long, and the humidity is only starting to build.
- July and August are warm and humid, with July highs around the mid-80s, a few days climbing past 90, and the occasional thunderstorm blowing through. A summer night by the lake is Progressive Field at its best, and the humidity is worth putting up with.
- September cools back to comfortable and is still good baseball weather.
With no roof overhead, a rainout is possible on a bad day in any month, so check the forecast before you leave for the ballpark. You can find more about what happens to your ticket in our First-Timer Guide section.
Night game or day game
Go with a night game if you have the choice. The signature view here is downtown Cleveland rising past the outfield, and it is most striking after dark, when the skyline and the light towers come up behind the park. An evening start also leaves the day open for the Gateway District blocks around the gates, the lakefront, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Choose a day game and those same hours go to the ballpark.
In April and September, a day game can be the better pick, because the afternoon can run warmer than the evening that follows it and the sun saves you layers.
Weekends and the division race
- Weekend nights and marquee opponents. The busiest nights are weekends against teams with big followings, with the Yankees and Red Sox chief among them. A weeknight against an opponent whose fans don’t travel is where the value is, so build a flexible trip around it instead of assuming the Guardians’ record sets the price by itself.
- A live AL Central race. Divisional games draw on the standings rather than on the visitor’s name, so when the Guardians are in a division race late in the season, those games tend to draw bigger crowds.
Rocket Arena sits next door in the Gateway District, so a Cavaliers game or a concert the same night brings its own crowd into the same few blocks, which can tighten parking and the bars around the gates.
One planning note: a published schedule is not a promise. Baseball has had work stoppages before, and one can wipe out games that are already on the calendar, so keep travel built around a single date refundable where you can.
